Why You Need Basic Technical Knowledge to Troubleshoot Hydraulics
Troubleshooting is usually an essential of using any technical product, however, employing disorganised troubleshooting techniques can result in costing both in terms of time and finances.
Time, productivity and in the worst cases, financial cost can all be wasted with erroneous analysis of issues. An individual may decide that a pump is faulty and needs to be replaced but then when the system still does not work, it’s clear that this could not have been the case. There must be another issue that was not identified by the individual who may have taken a shortcut approach to analysis of the issue at hand.
To avoid these situations, each troubleshooting session should be approached as an organised process. Keeping maintenance costs down and increasing productivity by ensuring downtime is kept to a minimum should be the main goals of any troubleshooting activity.
Mental discipline
Efficient troubleshooting is not something that is complicated. Although it’s important to have the right knowledge when it comes to the technical workings of a machine, the right attitude is also essential. All troubleshooting should be approached from the same angle – with logic and order.
There are two basic steps for approaching troubleshooting that will produce the best results. The first one is to consciously think through what could be causing the issue with the system malfunction. Secondly, jumping to conclusions could lead to taking some costly and inappropriate actions.
Background
Personnel in any business will usually have a range of different skills, experience and levels of competence. Before allocating any particular person to the responsibility of troubleshooting hydraulics, it’s essential that they have a good understanding of:
- Terminology used with hydraulics
- Graphic symbols
- What each component does and how it does it
- The ability to interpret a circuit diagram
- The ability to operate the system and the machine
- Understand troubleshooting procedures
Without this background knowledge, any troubleshooting activities are likely to fail!
